Positional Language

A positional word is a word that describes where an object is. Some examples of positional words are on top, under, behind, in front of, next to, in between, outside and inside.

LEARNING BENEFITS:

·       Speaking and following spoken directions

·       Learning one-step direction using positional language (above, under, next to, top corner and bottom corner)

Instructions:

Give the child the Ladybug and flower.

Begin the following clues:

-       put the flower on top

-       put the flower under

-       put the flower next to the ladybug

-       put the flower above

-       put the flower below

Now add the fish to the game with the following instruction:

-       put the flower in between the ladybug and fish

Young children naturally enjoy this type of game and will also take pleasure in giving directions. Now let them give you clues using positional language.
